Q: What does it cost to host a student?

A: Host families provide room and board to their exchange student. All students bring their own insurance and spending money for personal items like gifts, clothes, entertainment, hygiene items, school supplies, etc.. Hosting a student should not cause a financial hardship on a host family. Host families may deduct $50 per month of hosting an exchange student from their taxes. This amount may increase soon.

Q: Are host families compensated?

A: In general, host families are not compensated for hosting exchange students. Families provide room and board to exchange students because they desire to learn more about other cultures and customs and to make international friends! Host families qualify for a $50 per month deduction on their itemized tax returns for each month that they host an exchange student.

Q: How is my family selected to host an exchange student?

A: Interested host families should fill out and return the NWSE host family online registration and contact NWSE. Upon receipt of the registration, an NWSE Academic Coordinator will contact you to arrange a convenient time to meet with you to provide information and to interview your family. Screened and qualified families are then matched with an exchange student. Once this occurs, students and families may begin corresponding with one another.
